#FairSpaceForAll - new Library Seat Reservation Campaign launching Monday 29th April 2019 - Update

Finding seats in the Library can be tricky sometimes, particularly when some students leave belongings on a desk for hours, meaning another student cannot get a seat :( Following student and staff feedback, lots of data and benchmarking, the Library is launching a new campaign #FairSpaceForAll - starting Monday 29th April 2019 in 26 York Street!

Thank you to all students for engaging with our pilot campaign - we are currently reviewing all of our data, so please send your feedback to library@rcsi.ie

Updated Monday 20th May 2019

What will change with the #FairSpaceForAll Campaign?
This is a pilot campaign from Monday 29th April - Friday 17th May 2019 and will be reviewed during summer 2019. During the 3 weeks of the campaign, the following changes will happen in the Library:

The new 'blue slip'

  • A new #FairSpaceForAll bookmark will be available for student to note the time they leave their desk – this bookmark will be reusable for multiple days and can be kept with you for when you are in the library
  • An extended time limit of 45 minutes will be introduced to allow students to take a proper break for food or refreshments
  • Items left unattended without the #FairSpaceForAll bookmark, or where the 45 minutes break has been exceeded, may be removed by the library team from the library area and stored in plastic boxes on the concourse areas on Level 1 or Level 2. This will free up the individual space for another student, and belongings will have to be collected at these concourse areas. It is very important for students to understand that if desks are left unattended without the #FairSpaceForAll bookmark, that any items, including laptops will unplugged and removed.

What does ‘removing items’ mean?

At any point during the day, members of the Library team will be patrolling the Library spaces on Levels 1 and 2 and may remove items on seats which:

  • Do not have the #FairSpaceForAll bookmark on them with the time you left your desk
  • Seats where students have been away longer than 45 minutes, as indicated from the #FairSpaceForAll bookmark.
  • Have a 'fake time' on the bookmark i.e. later than when you really left

All items left at a desk will be put in a plastic box. This includes devices being unplugged so if work is unsaved – it might be lost.

Any food items will be put in the box also along with bottled drinks. Coffee/Tea cups will be left on a table beside the collection area.

Where will the boxes with removed items be left?

Area Monitored

What happens if I don’t collect my items on the day they are removed?

Uncollected items in boxes at the end of the day will be removed by security into lost property for collection.

What happens if a 'fake' time is written on the #FairSpaceForAll bookmark?

Where students write a later time as their 'time left' on their bookmarks, items may be removed, as if there was no bookmark on the space at all.

Tell us what you think! As this is a pilot initiative, we really want to hear what students think. Please let us know your comments or if you have any questions, email library@rcsi.ie.
